Dear MCC Parents/Guardians, The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has extended the free summer meal program for students through December 31, 2020 or until the funds run out. This program will provide free meals for all Murray County Central School students in grades Pre-Kindergarten –grade 12 Monday through Friday when school is in session. Students that are taking virtual learning through MCC using “Educere” are also eligible for this free meal program. Meals will not be delivered, but can be picked up at the high school at a designated window of time. In order to schedule meal pick up please contact Elissa Wieneke at 507-836-8360 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The free meals for all students will start on Monday, September 14th and will continue until December 31, 2020 or until funds run out from the USDA. At the conclusion of this program, your lunch status will return to free / reduced or paid, as determined by your completion of the Application for Educational Benefits. Any extra entrees or milk beyond the free meal will be charged as it normally would be. It is important that families continue to fill out the free and reduced lunch application otherwise known as “Application for Educational Benefits”. https://mcc.onlinejmc.com/Parent/meals_application.aspx This needs to be completed each year because the benefits do not carry over to the new school year. If your family qualifies you will receive school meals at no charge when this program ends. Filling out this form is also extremely beneficial to our school district because the more students that qualify, the more compensatory revenues our district will receive. We can use this money to help keep our class sizes small and offer opportunities that directly benefit our students. Please contact the district office with any questions.
Please bring a mask to tonight’s eligibility meeting for the Fall practice season! If you attended the cross country meeting you do not need to attend. Football is at 5:30 and Volleyball is at 6:00. The Minnesota Department of Health is developing a COVID Parent Screening Tool. This tool will provide guidance for when to keep your children home from school due to illness and/or COVID exposure. As soon as I receive this screening tool, it will be made available and should be used to screen your children for COVID symptoms. Prior to sending your children to school, a daily COVID screening must be conducted. Please see the link below for the most current COVID symptoms. https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/materials/symptoms.pdf For any questions or concerns related to illness, please contact the health office at 507-836-6184 ext. 5111 for West and 4120 for Central. The MCC School Board wanted to give another update on the school mascot/mascot name after continued discussion at the regular August 10, 2020 school board meeting. The Board reviewed the 198 community at large survey comments and wanted to reiterate that all of the data up to this point is only a piece of the process to gain as much information as possible. Consultation with the marketing/advertising/graphics arts professional continues. It may take a couple months before they are available to meet with the board to gain additional information. That, along with the current focus of preparing a safe return to school for both students and staff under the approved model, the board has decided to suspend discussion/work on this topic at this time. Under the current circumstances, the board feels the focus of time should be spent on the more pressing matters. This does not diminish the concerns of this issue.

Good Morning, Last night the school board decided to start the school year in the Hybrid Model which means all students will be in the school building each day with mandatory social distancing. Click on the link “register for 2020-2021” and fill out all forms (Free/Reduced, Health, and Residency) and questions for each child. Make sure to indicate if your child will be doing MCC Virtual Academy during the registration process. If you do not remember your JMC username and password, please contact either the high school or elementary building administrative assistants during regular office hours. Thank you.

This afternoon, Gov. Walz along with MDE and MDH announced Minnesota’s Safe Learning Plan for the 2020-21 School Year. As a part of this plan, MDE and MDH have created Regional Support Teams to assist schools in determining the start to the school year. The Safe Learning Plan uses a localized, data-driven approach that allows school districts to operate in a learning model that is responsive to the prevalence of COVID-19 cases in their communities. MCC Schools will be consulting with the regional support team in the coming days to determine what the start of the year will look like. There is a possibility that the Elementary School may be in a different learning model than the High School. The data along with other factors will make this determination. Once a decision has been made, we will let everyone know right away. A definite date can not be given at this time. Thank you for your continued patience.

Dear MCC Family, I wanted to send out a message to everyone that after much discussion with the prom committee, consisting of student, parent, teacher, and staff representatives of Murray County Central, the decision was made to cancel prom. Our current health situation and the fact that this prom would not be a “normal” prom were two of the biggest factors in the decision to cancel prom. There would not have been a dance this year due to the health requirements, and this is often the highlight for students. Many students felt that if we could not have a normal prom that they would rather not have prom. A discussion about after-prom and the money raised for after-prom was held. The after-prom committee which is a separate parent group/entity from the school district is going to discuss how to use the money raised for after-prom. While I know that this decision may be a disappointment for many, please know that it was made with much consideration from many perspectives. Thank you for your understanding. Sincerely, Jacob Scandrett- HS Principal
We will soon be starting instrument try-outs and every year we have students that can't afford to purchase a new instrument. If you have a used instrument that you would like to sell to a student or donate to the school, please contact Mr. Helgeson at firstname.lastname@example.org.

The MCC school board wanted to give an update after our June meeting to ensure everyone is receiving accurate information about the issue at hand. During our monthly meeting we heard from one concerned alumni during open forum of concerns about our school mascot, Rudy the Rebel. We appreciated his comments, we acknowledged them, had some very brief comments, and thanked him for taking the time to bring this to our attention. We also received numerous messages, letters, text, and calls from many concerned citizens spanning the spectrum of opinions on Rudy. We appreciate everyone who took the time to give your thoughts. The one clear message we got is that each person wants our school and mascot to represent something positive for our students and community. We know there is a difference of opinion on what the answer is to that issue when it comes to the Rebel name and mascot. We saw some really great letters and ideas. There will be more opportunities to provide feedback in the future for all of our students and stakeholders. We have established a plan for moving forward and are committed to ensuring we take your thoughts and concerns of all stakeholders into account. Ultimately, we hope the result will be the best outcome for our students and broader community who support our MCC school district. Please be aware that there is no concrete timeline for this process. Our plan is very fluid and we must also take into account other pressing matters that are affecting our District. We will be communicating our efforts with the public via our school website and any other format we deem appropriate. Again, we thank you for sharing your thoughts, no matter where your opinion lies. As we move through this process, we echo the last statement made from a recent school post – “To be an MCC Rebel, you have to be Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn. Be kind to each other.” Let’s keep our conversations respectful, on topic, and be a good example to our students on how we can handle and resolve a controversial topic. Thank you.

We will all encounter children today and in the days ahead who are confused and scared. Our students will be looking to all of us for comfort and peace. Continue to be a source of strength, consistency and calm reassurance that everything we are doing is to keep them safe and healthy. We will continue to work hard to do our best for our kids every day. We can do this together. Our kids are looking towards us to lead the way.
