As part of our commitment to providing a strong foundation in literacy, we would like to share some Science of Reading practices that you can implement at home to support your child's reading development. These practices are backed by research and have proven to be effective in helping children become strong readers. Here are a few strategies you can try:

  • Phonemic Awareness: Help your child develop their phonemic awareness skills by engaging in activities such as rhyming games, identifying and manipulating sounds in words, and playing word segmenting and blending games.

  • Phonics Instruction: Practice letter-sound correspondences with your child by using flashcards, word sorts, or engaging in phonics-based games. Encourage them to sound out words while reading and provide them with feedback and support.

  • Vocabulary Development: Foster your child's vocabulary development by engaging in conversations, reading books together, and exposing them to a variety of texts. Encourage them to use new words in context and provide explanations and definitions when needed.

  • Fluency Practice: Help your child improve their reading fluency by providing opportunities for them to read aloud. You can take turns reading paragraphs or pages and provide feedback on accuracy, rate, and expression.

  • Comprehension Strategies: Support your child's reading comprehension by asking them questions about the text they are reading, encouraging them to make connections to their own experiences, and discussing the main ideas and key details of the story.

We are thrilled to share that we continue to implement our LETRS training in our classroom. LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a professional development program that equips educators with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach reading. Through LETRS, we are enhancing our instructional practices and ensuring that each child receives the support they need to become confident readers. We are excited about the progress our students are making!

  • Volunteer Opportunities: We value and appreciate parent involvement in our classroom and reading to our students. If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to our classroom teachers about reading opportunities with students.

  • School Resources: Remember to take advantage of our school resources, such as the local library and online platforms, to support your child's learning at home. Our school and local libraries offer a wide range of books and materials that you can borrow. Additionally, our online platforms provide access to educational resources and activities.
