In the Counseling Center, I recently wrapped up Senior Meetings, taking time to connect with each of our seniors individually, along with many of their parents. We talked through graduation progress, plans for the upcoming year, and next steps. Throughout these conversations with students and parents, there were many questions about Financial Aid and paying for college. Murray County Central hosted Financial Aid night October 6 and we talked through the process of filling out the FAFSA. If you weren’t able to make it to Financial Aid Night and have questions, the presentation is posted on the School Counselor page on the MCC website. Feel free to email me with specific questions as well! The FAFSA is now open but there may be some delays in processing due to the government shutdown. For those families who filled out the FAFSA last year, the process should be pretty much the same. The senior class will have a meeting in January to go over the MCC Scholarship program and reminders to prepare for graduation. Don’t forget to keep working on your Personal Learning Plan!

It’s been so exciting to see the start of a new program at MCC - the Senior Sidekicks! Seniors have met with their kindergarten buddy once with our initial Pass the Spirit Event and will meet again next week for a fun fall activity. Kindergarteners will meet once a month with their sidekick for a time of mentorship and learning.

Now that Senior Meetings are complete, Junior Meetings will begin next week. I look forward to meeting with all the juniors (and parents/guardians as their schedules allow) to go over junior schedules, progress towards MCC graduation requirements and post-secondary plans. Those juniors who opted to recently took the PSAT-NMSQT, and all juniors will prepare to take the ASVAB at MCC on November 19. The ACT will take place in March, another optional college entrance exam for  students interested in pursuing higher education, particularly at a 4-year school. Please, let me know if you have any questions about upcoming events for juniors!

In other news, I just want to encourage all students to continue to take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them at MCC. The new classes we’re offering this year - Current Events, Community Service and Volunteerism, AI Tools for Life and Theater Communications are chances to learn something new and get involved in something beyond the classroom as well.  I’m so proud to work at and contribute to a school that values not only academics, but athletics and the arts as well. Getting involved in extra curricular activities is one of the best ways to make new friends and form a strong connection to your school. Research also tells us that getting involved helps build leadership skills, collaboration and communication, all essential skills for life after high school. So, students - find ways to get involved and take advantage of the unique opportunities we offer here at MCC!

There are so many great things happening, and I am excited to be here for it! Thank you for your on-going support and the daily encouragement you provide for our students.
