MCC K-Kids Club Has a Successful Year

By:  Nikki Cheskie

K-Kids is a community service club open to all 5th and 6th grade students at MCC and is sponsored by the Slayton Kiwanis Club.  This year we have had 34 students participating.

We started in the fall with electing our club officers and making table decorations for our school’s Veterans Day Program.  Some of our K-Kids also helped with the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast.

Christmas brought the opportunity to spread joy to others through making ornaments for the residents at both Lindenwood and EON, Inc. (Previously known as Prairie View.)  The club also held our Dollar Day fundraiser.  MCC Elementary students were invited to wear pajamas and bring $1 to donate to The Murray County Christmas Project.  We ended up collecting a total of $511.00!   We closed out 2025 by enjoying a Christmas party with snacks and a game of bingo.

In January we made Police Officer Survival Kits that contained a note and treats that were given to all our local law enforcement officers in the Slayton Police Department and Murray County Sheriff’s Office.  We celebrated I Love to Read Month in February by making bookmarks for our school library.  In March we made magnets with positive messages to hang on lockers throughout our school.

We are currently preparing for our biggest activity of the year – our May Basket Fundraiser.  We will be making around 600 May Baskets to distribute to West Elementary students on May 1st.  The K-Kids Club will then choose a local charity or organization to be the recipient of the funds we raise.  We will close out the year with a party to celebrate all of our success!

K-Kids would like to thank the Slayton Kiwanis Club for sponsoring us and all of the K-Kids parents for their support this year.
