Coaches VS Cancer

We can all agree that it has been a long winter.  If you have “cabin fever”, join us on Friday, March 8 for our 9th annual Coaches vs Cancer event!  The staff of MCC will take on the students in a “competitive” game of basketball. The score may matter to some, but the real reason for this event is to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

The Murray County Relay for Life Committee will provide a Burger Supper from 5:00 to 7:00 in the concessions area.  Cost of the meal is $6 ($3 for a burger only).  The meal consists of a burger, chips, bars, water, and chocolate or white milk.  Special thanks goes to the Murray County Cattlemen’s Association for donating the burgers and to the Murray County Dairy Association for donating the milk.

Tip-off will be at 7:00 p.m. in the MCC high school gym.  A free will offering will be taken at the doors.  Sanctioned referees have donated their time to officiate the game.  Everyone who is helping with the event, including the announcer, scoreboard operator, and scorekeeper have all donated their time to help with the cause.

Fans in the stands will be encouraged to support their favorite team not only by cheering them on, but also by adding to their score.  During the game, a bucket for each team will be circulated throughout the crowd.  For each dollar put in a team's bucket, one point will be added to the final score!  Once the final buzzer sounds, the totals will be announced to determine the winning score.

On hand for the evening will be the MCC pep band, and they will be joined by members of the Slayton Community Band!  There will be a special group of staff and student cheerleaders.

We will also be accepting hair donations for “Pantene Beautiful Lengths” which provides free wigs to cancer patients who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy treatments.  Renee Giese of Corner Salon and Cheryl Carney of Slayton Beauty Shop are donating their time to cut 8-inch hair donations.

We have a special event happening at half-time.  Cale Engelkes has stepped up to get his long hair cut short if we raise $400 in donations.  If we raise $500, his friend Jake Bleyenberg will cut his hair!  Cale is doing this in memory of his Grandma Engelkes and Grandpa Christensen. We will also be auctioning off tickets to a Minnesota Twins game, courtesy of Hadley Steel.

The elementary Student Council is sponsoring “Coin Wars” all week.  Students are encouraged to bring in coins for their grade.  The grade that raises the most money will get to have a representative do something fun at half-time of the game on Friday night!  The High School Honor Society is also conducting a coin war.  There may be some pies in the face during half-time.  You won’t want to miss it!

The MCC Student Council Relay for Life Team is sponsoring Coaches vs. Cancer.  On Wednesday, March 6, they will have “Hats on to Cure Cancer” and students can pay $1 to wear a hat in school all day to show their support.

All proceeds from the week’s events will be donated to the American Cancer Society.  We hope to see a gym full of people who will support the fight against cancer! This winter may be getting long, but the fight against cancer has gone on way too long.  We need to end the fight!!  Thanks for supporting everyone in our community who is on the cancer journey.  It is life changing.
